Product Description

More than 400 of the author’s own drawings provide an authentic record of over 1,300 years of changing fashions in women’s hairstyles and headwear in England. Finely detailed images — rendered from vintage sources — depict everything from wimples and crespines worn in Anglo-Saxon times to early Victorian bonnets and pillboxes of the mid-20th century.

I was recommended this book by professional costume milliner Louise Macdonald, who has worked on BBC productions such as the wonderful Pride and Prejudice. This book starts in the 11th century and is broken up into the relevant periods from that time to the modern day. Written descriptions of the “trends” provide context to issues of occasion, rank or status. B/W sketches are provide showing good detail, though normally only the front or side view. An excellent resource for costume designers. This Dover edition is dated 2006.
